The Biblical Imperative: Total Abstinence

In Proverbs 9:1-5 we read that WISDOM invites the simple to “Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the WINE which I have mingled.”   But in Proverbs 20:1 we read that “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging:  and whosoever is deceived thereby is NOT WISE.”

Then in Proverbs 23:29-35 we are warned to not even LOOK at the wine because of the consequences it brings.  “LOOK NOT thou upon the wine...”

Dr Robert P. Teachout gives a clear (although scholarly) explanation about the words translated “wine” in the Bible.  This book is actually taken from the author’s doctoral dissertation.

I personally am very grateful for the answers which I now can use to clear up the confusion in the minds of many young believers, young people and even children about why the Bible does NOT teach it is okay to drink alcohol.

Why are believers confused about drinking or not drinking wine?
